Carolyn Sue McCord

Carolyn Sue McCord, of Kennewick, Washington, passed peacefully into the arms of Our Heavenly Father on the afternoon of October 2, 2024 with her family at her side in the Memory Care Facility of Ciel Senior Living of Kennewick, WA. Carolyn was born August 28, 1939 in Marion, Illinois the eldest of three girls, Carolyn, Marolyn (deceased) and Sharon born to Carl Thomas Brown and Dora Evelyn (McInturff) Brown.

Carolyn and her family moved from Marion, IL to Richland in 1946 when her father took a heavy equipment Operator job on the Hanford Project. She began her education by attending Sacajawea Grade School, Carmichael Middle School and graduating from Columbia High School in 1958. During her time growing up in Richland, she made many treasured friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Carolyn married Robert Hebert in 1958 and that marriage of 50 years produced three children, David, Donna (deceased) and John Hebert. Throughout that period, the family enjoyed times of family activities that will be remembered forever.

Carolyn kept busy most of her lifetime and had a variety of jobs that enriched her knowledge and capabilities. She retired her Clerical and Secretarial services after 24 dedicated years on the Hanford Site in 2001. She subsequently retired to Sun City West, AZ where she decided in 2008 to dissolve her marriage and move back to Richland, WA and enjoy her retirement with her family and just take it easy.

She took a part-time job with Costco, serving food samples to customers. In mid-April 2009, she encountered a customer she recognized, Bob McCord, a Handford worker. They had a brief discussion, “good to see you and stay in touch”. Stay in touch we did! On June 12, 2010 Carolyn and Bob were happily joined together in holy matrimony by Chaplain Timothy J Ledbetter. In the following 14 years of marriage, the bond between Carolyn and Bob was stronger than ever and their love for each other was never ending.

Carolyn and Bob traveled extensively during their 14 years starting with Hawaii being her favorite location, relaxing and taking it easy on Maui, sightseeing, shopping, dining, and riding the big waves on Oahu. When Hawaii wasn’t in the picture, we made trips to Seaside, Oregon. We took cruises to Alaska as well as attending Elk Conventions in various cities in the state (Homer, Skagway, Juneau and Sitka). Carolyn also cruised the Bahamas with her daughter-in-law Debbie when Debbie retired. They had a great time touring the islands, horseback riding, snorkeling, sun bathing, dining, socializing, and shopping.

Carolyn and Bob’s locations of travel included New York City, Grand Central Station, Time Square (where she met the famous Naked Cowboy), and the Empire State Building. They spent time in Florida attending Elk Conventions in Orlando and Tampa (no hurricanes). They visited Bob’s brother Jim and his family in Huntsville, AL. They also spent a significant amount of time in the state of Texas while in Austin and San Antonio driving up to Mason and Brady then down to Corpus Christi and Padre Island (Bob lived in Corpus during his youth years and had relatives in San Antonio and Mason).

One of the other states visited was Arizona, attending an Elk Convention in Phoenix. It was an exciting time again for Carolyn as we bought a condo in Sun City West, AZ, sight unseen, next to our best friends, Marilyn and Roger True (Marilyn sent us pictures of the condo). We spent our winters there 2015-2017, enjoying life and playing Mexican Train with the True family. During that time period, we also took several trips to Nevada, Laughlin and Las Vegas.

One of the most memorable trips was to Langley, British Columbia in mid-March 2019 when we watched our grandson’s Vancouver Island University basketball team win the Canadian National basketball Championship and he was selected as the MVP of the Tournament (very exciting!!).

Carolyn lived life with a smile for everyone, her love for her dear friends, love and care for her precious pets and above all, love for her extended family. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents Dora and Carl Brown, sister Marolyn (Brown) Whitten, and her daughter Donna (Hebert) Dittus.

Carolyn is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 14 years, Robert (Bob) McCord. She is also survived by two sons: David (Debbie) Hebert of Richland, WA; son John (Lisa) Hebert of Kennewick, WA. She is also survived by her sister: Sharon (Norris) Johnson of Richland, WA. and brother-in-law Jerry Whitten of Richland, WA. She leaves behind her beloved grandchildren Zane and Chad Hebert and Jacob and Zachery Hebert and great-grandchild Henley Snowhite.

A Celebration of Life Service for Carolyn will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, October 26, 2024 at Einan’s Sunset Memorial Event Center with a reception followed by a family graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be made to the Washington State Elks Therapy Program for Children at PO BOX 110760, Tacoma, WA 98411, or a charity of your choice.

  • I will always remember how nice she was to me when I would go over and visit. And how happy she was at all our family dinners for the holidays. She also made the best hush puppies I’ve ever had. She will definitely be missed. Rest in peace.
