James “Jim” Merrill

Jim Merrill passed away February 28, 2015 at age 90 at home in Richland, Washington.  A long-time resident of Richland, Jim was born September 19, 1924 in Castle Rock, Washington to Albert and Esther Merrill. Growing up in Castle Rock, Jim and his brother, Bud helped out at the meat market owned by their father. In 1943 Jim volunteered to be inducted into the Army. He was assigned to Dalhart Air Base, where he met his wife-to-be, Leslie. They married in 1946.

Jim completed his Masters Degree at Stanford University and worked as a statistician in the nuclear industry in many locations around the country and internationally. A dedicated bike rider, Jim was one of the founders of the Richland Bike Club in 1973 and completed many 100-mile Century bike rides. A talented wood carver, Jim created innumerable wooden cross necklaces that he gave to any and all who admired them. Jim was a dedicated member of Central United Protestant Church and served as an usher there for many years.

Preceded in death by his loving wife, Leslie. Jim is survived by his son, Steve Merrill; daughters: Lisa and husband, Alan Ahrens, Barbara Merrill, and Denise and husband, Bob Jackson. He is also survived by granddaughter, Summer and her husband, Mark Mohrlang and children: Allister and Amelia; and granddaughter, Nichelle and her husband, John Keatley as well as their children: Isla and Jett; and his brother-in-law, Monty Fones and wife, Nancy.
