11/11/1931 — 02/23/2015
From Richland, WA | Born in Pacific Junction, Iowa
Ed Shane
Edward Walter Shane, age 83, went to
be with his heavenly Father on February 23, 2015, while home at Wynwood
Assisted Living, surrounded in love by his friends and family.
Ed was born November 11, 1931, in Pacific Junction, Iowa. He moved to Selah, Washington
with his parents and siblings at the age of 13.
Four years later they moved to Richland, Washington, where he graduated
from Columbia High School with the class of 1951. Later that year, he enlisted in the US Navy,
where he spent his time on the USS
Guadalupe AO 32 as an Engineman-Petty Officer 3rd Class, serving in
Japan during the Korean War. He was
honorably discharged in November of 1955 after receiving numerous service and
conduct metals.
While working as a janitor at Kadlec Methodist Hospital in Richland, he met his wife Blanche Williams (he affectionately nicknamed Sugarbabe), who was working as an LPN at the time. They were married at the hospital on January 3, 1958. They lived in Richland and Kennewick for most of their 58 years of marriage.
Ed was a committed family man and in
1960, they started their family when they adopted their daughter, Patty Fern
(Armstrong). Four years later, they
adopted their second child, Michael Edward Shane. They always made their kids feel special by
letting them know that they were “chosen.”
Over the years, Ed continued his education at Columbia Basin Community College,
graduating as an Engineering Technician.
He worked for the City of Richland for seven years, before working for
various Hanford contractors as a surveyor and pipefitter until he retired in
1995.
During his career, and after retirement, Ed always enjoyed using his skills as a handyman and jack of all trades. Whether it was fixing something around the house, creating one of kind woodworkings, or doing odd jobs to help others out, he was always busy.
Over the years, he enjoyed buying, fixing and selling cars, playing guitar and singing with friends and family, fishing and camping, vegetable gardening, and playing or watching sports. During his later years in life, he enjoyed numerous trips to Seattle to root on the Mariners. Most of all, he enjoyed his time spent with family, including his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Ed was known for his quiet, kind-hearted demeanor, and his generous, selfless
nature. He always had a clever sense of
humor, and if you were on the receiving end of his teasing or joking, you knew that
he liked you.
Ed was preceded in death by: his parents, and his oldest brother, Pete. He is survived by: his wife, Blanche; his
children, Patty Armstrong (Scott) of Richland and Mike Shane (Shelly) of Yakima;
eight grandchildren, Megan Davin (Josh), Michaela Shane (Chris), Sierra
Reiboldt (Nick), Jamie Nathlich, and Michael Nathlich. He is also survived by great-grandchildren Avrey,
Michael and Sena Wilks, Avya Davin, Adelynn and Kaydence Reiboldt.
Viewing for family and friends will be held this Saturday, February 28th from 5:00
pm to 7:00 pm at Einan’s Sunset Chapel, 915 By-Pass Highway, Richland,
Washington. A memorial service
celebrating Ed’s life will take place on Sunday, March 1st at 2:00
pm, followed by a graveside burial service at Sunset Gardens. A reception with light food and beverage will
be held at the Kennewick Church of the Nazarene, 2402 S. Union St., Kennewick,
