Kenneth Charles Oberg

Ken Oberg, 86, of Pasco, passed away at his home. He was born in Yakima to George and Edith Oberg, the youngest of three, and grew up on the family's fruit farm. He graduated from Yakima High School in 1946, and went on to study at WSU. He moved to Richland and worked for the AEC at Hanford. He was called up for service in the army, and while stationed at Ft. Carson CO, he met his future wife, Barbara. The two were married in Denver in1954. They settled in Richland where Ken resumed working at Hanford. They raised four children together. Ken was involved for many years with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts organizations, and later spent time volunteering with Christ's Hands at Central Church. He loved to fish and camp, and spent many family vacations baiting hooks for his kids and passing on his love for the outdoors. Ken was a family man, and he and his wife Barbara provided a welcoming home where all the neighborhood kids seemed to congregate. After retirement from Hanford, they traveled taking many vacations visiting Hawaii, Europe, and Mexico, usually accompanied by friends and family. Ken loved spending time with friends, playing cards and telling stories, but his happiest moments were in the company of his family. He will be remembered as the guy who could fix almost anything.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Carroll, his sister, Leone, and his son, Gary. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara, his son David Carol Oberg of N. Hollywood, CA, his daughter Sandra Tim O'Doherty, of Spokane, and his daughter Susan Tom Friend, of Kingston WA, as well as numerous grand-children and great –grandchildren. He also had two daughters from a previous marriage, Christine Hall of Kalispell, MT, and Deedee Linderer of Fairfield CA.

Ken's memorial service will be Saturday, July 5th, 2:30 pm at Einan's at Sunset in Richland. At Ken's request, please dress casually - no suits. The family would like to thank the staff at Kadlec Hospital, the wonderful nurses at PCM, and Hospice Organization. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Tri-City Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

  • Barb and family, Ken was a special person, he was always friendly and happy. I will always remember Ken going out at about 8:30-9:00 PM and mowing the lawn when it began to cool off from the days heat. It was odd to me, because it was getting dark and I don’t know how he could see where he had mowed and not mowed.

If I had a question on how to fix something on my house I always knew I could go to Ken and get an answer on how to fix it.

I will always remember Ken as a good friend.
