Raymond F. Carney
Raymond F. Carney died at 10:50 PM on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at his home in Richland. Raymond was born in Pittsburgh, PA, April 28, 1924 to Edwin and Mary Stocke Carney. At age eighteen he joined what was then named, Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, at East Pittsburgh in May 1942. In November 1942, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps, and after stateside training, served two years in England and six months in France as an aircraft armorer and mechanic on B24 and B17 bombers during World War II, returning to the US in February 1946. On March 6 he met Priscilla Ann McDaniel and they were married July 17, 1946 after Ray had returned to Westinghouse. Ray attended night school for the next several years, studying accounting and business law. Other educational pursuits included a Penn State course in psychology and a Contract Law Seminar at San Francisco University. While employed at Forest Hills near Pittsburgh, in addition to his regular job, Ray served as the auditor for the Westinghouse Headquarters Manufacturing and Engineering Laboratory Employee Federal Credit Union. For a year and a half while living in North Strabane Township, Ray was Assistant District Commissioner, Boy Scouts of America. While in the Pittsburgh area he was a member of the National Association of Accountants. After twenty five years in various financial management positions in Westinghouse plants in and around Pittsburgh, Ray and Priscilla moved to the Washington D.C. area, where Ray worked on financial control of civilian and military construction at that time undertaken by the Westinghouse subsidiary, Urban Systems Development Corporation, throughout the US. In July 1974 the family moved to Richland and Ray worked in various Westinghouse Hanford financial management positions. He spent his last ten years managing the Westinghouse business systems, and in 1987 managed the integration of the Hanford contractors financial and other business systems into the consolidated operations and engineering contractor, Westinghouse Hanford Company. He retired in 1989. While at Hanford Ray served as Chairman of the 1979 Westinghouse Hanford US Savings Bond Drive, and the following year as savings bond campaign Chairman for the entire Hanford complex. In 1981 he served as Chairman, Finance for the Second International Conference on Liquid Metal Technology in Energy Production in Richland.
I had the privilege of working with Ray on several Hanford Site-wide information systems projects in the 1980s. Ray was a joy to work with and a great representative for the Westinghouse Hanford organization. I had lunch with Ray several years ago and will cherish the times we had together.
Priscilla, I’m so sorry for your loss. Ray was always very nice to me at work and remembered me every time we would bump into each other after retiring.
I regret that I was unable to attend his service, my own loss of George was way to close to the surface.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
