Steven Walter Norbeck left us on December 5, 2012 at Life Care Center of Richland after a short illness. He was born on December 13, 1954 in Kennewick WA and spend his early years in Richland, attending Richland schools until 1971 when his family moved to Red Wing MN. He graduated from Red Wing High School in 1973 and Ely MN Junior College in 1975. H worked as a hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey in Bismarck North Dakota for over 30 years, retiring in 2007 due to a disability. The highlight of his career was two trips he took to Ukraine for the USGS to help train their hydrologists on U.S. Flood control methods. Steve always enjoyed the annual hunting trips he took with his Dad and Uncles in Washington, and later with his cousin Ted in Minnesota. He greatly enjoyed time spent with family. Steve is survived by his parents, Walter and Betty Norbeck of Richland, his sister Debra Daniel Smith of Tieton WA, his two daughters MandyDaniel Spencer of Mercer Island WA and Kimberli Coleman Fredericks of Bismarck ND and 3 Grandchildren Brandon Spencer, Hunter Spencer, and Keira Fredericks. He is also survived by three aunts, Lorraine Elledge, Shirley Erickson and Margaret Norbeck and two nephews Zach and Alex Smith. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and many aunts and uncles. We will celebrate Steve's life with a memorial service on Sunday December 9, 2012 at Memories at Sunset Event Center in Richland. Please make any donations to the American Cancer Society. Our family would like to thank the staff at Life Care Center for their compassion and care of Steve in his final days.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Steve’s family during this difficult time. Steve will be greatly missed by his U.S.G.S. family here in Bismarck.
Our hearts are heavy at this difficult time. Steve was always so good about calling and making trips to Minneapolis to see all of us. We enjoyed his visits and will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.
So sorry to hear about your loss. One day soon their will be no sickness, in turn no one dying of sickness, God knows this, that is why at Isaiah 33:24 it says: “No resident will say I am sick”, causing us not to pain or hurt because of our loved ones dying from illness. I hope this comfort the family.
Betty, Walt, Deb and Dan, Alex and Zach,
I wish I could be there in person to give you a hug and share in your grief. I have memories of being with all you when we were MUCH younger that make me smile. It’s too bad we grew up and didn’t get to see much of each other. I pray for God’s grace and comfort in the days and weeks ahead. I know you’re relieved that Steve isn’t suffering anymore, but it hurts like crazy to lose someone you love. My son Benjamin summed it up well when we lost a good friend recently, “That sucks.” Not elegant words, but true. Take care of each other and love on each other a lot. Jane and family
I will miss my cousin Steve. I remember playing as kids when we went to Grandma’s in Minnesota, and other visits up there over the years to see Uncle Hilmer and others. I also appreciate Steve keeping in touch. He called after my Mom, his aunt Ardyce passed away. I remember him saying how hard it would be for him when the time came that his folks passed away, because they meant so much to him. Who would have known that he would be gone before them. My sincere condolences to Betty, Walt, Deb and the family.
We want to express our sadness about your family’s loss. We are supporting you in our prayers.
Love,
Oral, Mike & Vickie

My family has been friends with yours..seems like my whole life! May God show you his mercy and comfort at this time! I pray for the peace that surpasses all understanding to touch your hearts and minds during this time of loss, and that The Lord Our God gives you comfort in knowing that you will see Steve again…:- My heartfelt blessings to you all,
Sincerely,
Debbie Pietz~
I wish to extend my condolences to the Norbeck family. I knew Steve for the last 20 years through our shared hunting experiences in Minnesota at the Christensen farm. During that time we experienced many “memorable” hunting adventures. We would often relive those adventures and share other life experienes while sitting around the fireplace in the Christensen “great” room. My father accompanied me to a few of my trips to deer camp and he too found found pleasure in Steve’s company. We all shared many good times and laughs together; often until the wee hours of the morning!!! I found Steve to be a valued hunting companion and good friend! We will all miss Steve at deer camp for years to come, but his memory and our shared experiences will be with us always!!
WE ARE SORRY FOR THE LOSS OF YOUR SON.
Steve and I worked together for over 20 years until I retired in 2003. We were good friends during our time with the USGS and even closer since I retired. He was a good friend and I will miss him immensely. It’s so unfortunate that he died so young. His sudden death was a shock to us all. My wife, Cindy, and I offer our sincere condolences to Steve’s family.
