Lois Hinson Shaffer

Lois Shaffer passed away peacefully in her home in Pasco, WA, on August 16th 2012 at the age of 90. She was born May 4th, 1922 in Hohenwald, TN. She had been a resident of the Tri-Cities since 1944 when she moved here with her parents.

Lois moved from Hohenwald to Old Hickory, TN, where her father started working for DuPont. They moved to Indianapolis, IN, and to Prior, OK, before moving to Richland, where her father continued working for DuPont. Lois worked in the purchasing department at Hanford.

Lois met her husband Sonny before he left for Europe to serve in World War II. When he returned they married in Hagerstown, MD, on February 27th 1945. They returned to Richland in 1947, where Sonny worked as an electrician and they started their family. They moved to Pasco in 1956 where they have lived ever since.

Lois was survived by her husband Sonny of 67 years and the following children: Daughter Vicki Monty Scott and grand kids; Aaron Sloane Scott and Amber Andrew Scott Weiseth; Son Tim Debbie Shaffer and grandsons Derek and Chris Shaffer; Son John Sandy Shaffer and grandson Tim Shaffer; Son Jeff Lisa Shaffer and grand-kids; Emerson, Griffin, and Marcella Shaffer. Sister: Madelyn Dick Epler. Also, six great grand kids.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Gladys Hinson, who were long time residents of Richland, WA, and her two brothers Jack and Bill Hinson.

Lois was very proud of the fact that she went to Columbia Basin College, in her early 50s, and got her degree in Early Childhood Education. She was instrumental in opening the daycare/preschool at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Pasco, WA, where she and Sonny have been members since moving to Pasco. She directed the daycare for over 13 years and it continues to this day.

Lois was also very proud of the fact that all four of her children have longevity in their marriages with their original spouses. Lois enjoyed her family, Mariner baseball, and dark chocolate.

The family wishes to thank the Visiting Angels for their support to the family for the past year in allowing Lois to remain in her home.

A memorial service will be held at the Emmanuel Baptist Church on Saturday August 25th at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Union Gospel Mission or a charity of your choice. You may sign the online guest book and leave a message of condolence at www.einansfuneralhome.com.

May she rest in peace in the arms of her God. We loved her very much and she will be missed.

  • I’m thinking of you all this week as you begin living life without your wife, mother, grandma, sister, etc. When I think of her and see her in my mind, it’s with that sweet smile on her face. She was a real sweet lady – and just think – she’s with Jesus – AND we get to see her again!

  • Lois was a Mom to me in so many ways, she mentored me as I took the position of EBC Preschool & Childcare Director. A job I never planned to hold, when we moved back home. But when I was placed in that position, she was always there with a listening ear. I could talk to her and she would always remind me to pray and God would direct me. Sonny I hope you realize how much we love both of you and will continue to love you in Lois’ absence. She is in her healed body and her Daddy’s arms. Vicki, Tim, Johnny and Jeff your Mom was so proud of you and your families. When your mom talked about you she beamed with pride.
