Betty Ann Blackburn

Betty A. Blackburn Mosteller, 76, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Feb. 11th, 2012 at her home in Richland, WA. Betty was born February 18th, 1935 in Denver, Colorado and moved to Richland in 1943 with her parents Thomas and Marie Mosteller. She graduated from Columbia H. S. in Richland in 1953 where she was very active in women's sports. As a senior she was voted "Best All Around Athlete", playing basketball, volleyball and especially softball. After graduating from Col. H.S. Betty went to work for G.E. at the Hanford Project and worked there until her retirement in 2005. In 1955 she married Loyd Wayne Blackburn and kept her maiden name Mosteller as her middle name, dropping the Ann. She was very proud to be a Mosteller and wanted to keep the name in her life. She was well known in the community as "the" fast pitch softball pitcher in the 70's. She was considered a pioneer in women's fast pitch and loved the sport so much she played softball until the age of 55 with her 2 daughters.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Marie Mosteller and brother, Barry Mosteller.

She is survived by her brothers, Bob and his wife Wanda Mosteller and Brad Mosteller; sisters Barbara Horton and her husband Jim and Bonni Owens, 2 daughters, Debra and her husband Marcus Bierman and Lori Richardson; 4 grandchildren, Nicholas Bierman and his wife Courtney, Jennifer Bierman and her fiancée Frankie Brazil, Ryan Richardson and his wife Patricia and Rashelle Richardson; 7 great grandchildren, Taylor, Baleigh, Kyal, Quinn, Cody, Madison and Brady.

Betty loved her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren very much and was always there for them. She was an amazing and independent woman who will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Thank you Betty from all of us and may you rest in peace forever and watch over us and take care of us as you did in life. "Lots-o-Love, see ya".

  • I’m sorry to hear about Betty’s passing. We go back a lot of years. I played fast-pitch from the mid-50s to the mid-80s. We were good friends back in those days, along with Marilyn Richey, Bev Rafferty and others. Bobby and I played together before he moved to Utah.

My heart and thoughts are with the family.

  • Dear Debbie, Lori and Family,

I met Betty in 1972, and she was my friend. Since 1999, here in the Condo, she would roll down her car window for a quick update on things as we passed in the parking lot. I will miss her. My condolence on your loss. John

  • Oh how I miss my grandma so much already. She was a very strong and stubborn woman and I think I am very much like her in that way. I’ll never forget how much I loved seeing her at my work and how she wouldn’t leave until she got a hug from me. Even the way she said my name will forever stick in my head. She loved us all so much and always made it a point to tell us, I’m glad I was always able to let her know the exact same. I’ll miss answering the phone at my mom’s and hearing her voice, nothing new to say…but always an “I love ya”. I love you so much and miss you so much Grandma!

  • Gods Blessings to all the family of Betty. She was a fantastic lady. She knew all the employees at Albertsons by name. Loved to talk to her and visit. She is in peace now with our loving Lord. Peace be with you, Betty.

  • Betty was a kind and loving person. I have so many great memories of her. Debbie and Lori, you can be proud of your Mom. She loved you very much, and I know that you love her. I know that you both will miss her, as she will be missing you too. It is wonderful to know that all of us will see her again someday and be able to continue our relationship with her.

  • Mom,

God could not have blessed me with a more loving, caring, beautiful Mother and friend. It’s so hard to believe that you are gone. I’m really going to miss talking to you twice a day, everyday. Words cannot even begin to tell you how extremely thankful I am for all the many things you did for me. Your guidance and support through out the many years will never be forgotten. You were my “Rock!”

I will miss you deeply Mom and I want you to know I am so grateful to have had you for as long as I did. You are no longer in any pain and that gives me so much peace.

Your spirit will always live on in my heart with all the many memories you gave to me, and there are many! I also know you never liked to say “goodbye.” So you would say, “see ya later kid!”

I love you more than words could ever express! So in the meantime, “I will see ya later Mom.”

Lots and lots of love Mom, your daughter, Lori

  • Betty’s memorial yesterday was very nice.I think she would have been very happy with it. She did not want any big ceremony and we kept it to family only to honor her wishes. I don’t think she even wanted that, but for the family we had it and I am glad we did. Her siblings and family came in from out of town which was very kind and supportive. I was so very proud of my son and his girls to stand before us and say goodbye to Betty. It broke my heart, but made me so proud of them. As I sat there listening and watching Betty’s life before us I began to realize that we will never have those times with her again. Life is truly a very short time on this earth and after every second that passes in our life we can never get them back. So I am looking at life in a different light after the passing of Betty and I thank her for letting me be a part of her life. I will always remember the fun times we all had and cherish the memories. I love you Betty and will miss you. God bless you Betty.

  • I first met Betty in 1976 in the 3706 Bldg. in the 300 Area at Hanford. I worked for Westinghouse and she worked for Rockwell. We stayed friends and talked when ever we ran into each other. I remember her being tall and lanky and I would ask her how softball team was doing. She always had a smile on her face, she will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

  • As has been said, Betty was indeed a very private person! However, I worked with Betty in the Federal Building for about 10 years and during this time I got to know a few things about her life outside of work. She loved her family and was especially proud of her grandchildren. She was delighted when she became a great-grandma. And, we all know how much she loved sports, particularly the Mariners and the Seahawks games!

Betty was an invaluable team member at work, her knowledge of the “drawings” she handled every day was amazing – she just about had all the identification numbers memorized…and we’re talking about thousands upon thousands of them! Betty’s knowledge and experience was greatly missed when she retired. I send my sincerest sympathies to Betty’s family.

  • Loving thoughts of a very dear high school friend… Betty was a role model and a great athlete. Our high school days were spent seeing who could score more points playing basketball together. She always won. I’m grateful she called me her friend.

My condolences to her family. She was one special person.

  • MoM,

It still is so hard not being able to go to the phone and call you. I miss you terribly! I am so blessed to have had you as my Mother and a friend. My heart aches to hear your voice again and sometimes I will just plug in your phone to hear your voice on the answering machine. Life feels like it is spinning awful fast, but it just feels like yesterday that I found you. I love you so much MoM. I hope that you are with your loved ones and are happy and not in any more pain. Your private memorial was heart wrenching but it also showed me how loved you were and still are. I know one day I will see you again. Rest in the loving arms of Jesus MoM.

I LOVE YOU SO VERY, VERY MUCH!

    Your youngest daughter, Lori
