Shun-Mei Lan
Mei Lan, age 55, passed away on June 18th, 2010 after a difficult battle with pancreatic cancer. Mei was born in Taipei, Taiwan on Aug. 24, 1955. She leaves behind her husband, Shing Lan, her three children Megan, Craig, and Curtis, and her two brothers David and Henry Kao. Although her children are all adults now, they will always miss her devotion, care, and wonderful holiday meals.
Mei came to the United States in 1980 and graduated from University of Louisiana with a Masters Degree in both statistics and computer science. She worked for Lockheed-Martin Corporation as a software engineer at the time of her illness. Mei could always be counted on for her projects and she showed a rare dedication and commitment to the workplace. Mei was honest, hardworking, loving, and thoughtful of others and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Mei's family invites those who knew her to say farewell at her memorial at 2pm Saturday, June 26th, 2010, at Einan's Funeral Home at 915 By-Pass Hwy, Richland, WA 99352. In lieu of flowers, Mei would be honored if you would keep her memory alive by making a donation to the Tri-Cities Chinese Alliance Church, 2004 George Washington Way, Richland WA 99354, or the Hospice at the Chaplaincy, 2108 W. Entiat, Kennewick, WA 99336.
Shun-Mei Lan will be remembered for her service as a founding board member of Washington Elementary Chess Champions a non-profit corporation dedicated to helping children improve their analytical thinking skills through the game of chess.
I will also remember her as a caring mother concerned for her son’s education, and as a thoughtful and capable person, giving what she felt was her duty to serve others. She was always grateful to those who taught and served her family, and felt everyone should recognize and appreciate the service provided by our teachers.
Mei was always very humble and preferred to stay out of the limelight, but was a very effective organizer, and gave many words of encouragement and helped many other volunteers accomplish the tasks necessary to establish this chess organization here in the Tri-cities.
I believe this community will miss her service, I will always be grateful for her years of friendship, and assistance and I for one will miss her.
Dear Lan Family, Steve and I were so saddened to hear of Mei’s passing. I just recently saw her at the CBRC and had no idea that she had been ill, always smiling and so kind. I so much appreciate the friendship Curtis and Sam had and our associations over the years with your family. We have been blest to have known Mei, she was a wonderful person and we will miss her! Our deepest sympathies go out to your family at this difficult time, Love Tai, Steve, Sam, Lauren and Emily Trent
It was an honor to work with Mei. She is a wonderful person with outstanding skills and she became a real fried to all of her co-workers. I will miss her smile, her laugh, and her excellent work.
May was a very special friend to me, a sister at heart. I loved being near her and learning of her family. She tried to teach me how to say David’s name in Chinese, but we didn’t have time enough for me to practice enough. I truly miss her. She was a joy in my life. I look forward to seeing her in the future, when my spirit goes to where hers is.
Our sincere condolences and deepest sympathy on Shun-Mei’s untimely passing. We apologize that we won’t be able to attend the service because of a trip to San Francisco on Friday to have Yosen’s post surgery check-up at Stanford Hospital. We hope for the Lan Family a recovery after this great loss and doing well in the spirit of Shun-mei’s love and devotion.
Yosen and Johanna Liu
May was always so very thoughtful. She loved and adored my daughter, Eva. Whenever my wife would pick me up from work she would love to come out and see her, kiss her, and hug her.
She was always so considerate of others and has a special place in my family’s heart. She was not just a co-worker, but a good friend.
I can’t help but smile thinking back when I joined the big Lan celebrations during the holidays. Shun-Mei brought much joy.
Thanks Mei for the many times you helped me with my work.
I am so sorry to hear of Mei’s passing. I have such good memories of times together at chess tournaments and our son’s play dates and school activities. She was always so sweet and gentle. Our family sends its love to yours.
I knew Shun-Mei as Mei. She was a regular attendee in my exercise classes. Mei was very well liked by the members of CBRC. She was a “habitual” attendee. She even had her own “spot” on the exercise floor. I enjoyed her company very much. She was fun and very dedicated. She was always polite and friendly. Maybe even a tad shy, until the music started! Then she would give it her all. I believe that was the way Mei must have lived her life-giving everything her all each and every day. I already miss her presence in my classroom. My deepest sympathy to her family!
I knew Mei from CBRC. We took Body Step and Body Pump classes together. Mei greeted everyone with a smile and kind words. She often volunteered to set up my equipment when I was running late to class. Mei was a friend and I miss her very much.
I send my condolences to her husband and children.
