Marian Mergel
Marian Mergel, 82, of Benton City passed away October 18, 2008 at Agape Care with family at her side. Mom was born in Webster, South Dakota on December 12, 1925 to Leo and Agnes Mattecheck. During the Depression her family moved to Long Beach, California, which was the beginning of several traveling adventures. After attending her brother, Fr. Leo's ordination in Chicago, mom and her brother, "Bumpy" Frank rode his Indian motorcycle back to Portland, OR. Mom earned her welding card and worked as "Rosie the Riveter" with her sister Delores during WWII. After the war, the family traveled to Alaska to homestead. Later the family moved back to the lower 48 settling in the Portland/Mt. Hood area.
It was in Portland that Mom met Loren Mergel. They were married in 1951 and settled in Benton City, WA in 1957. Marian was a "stay at home" mom raising 6 children.
She is survived by five of her children: Kathy Stordahl Wayne, Connie Meredith Raymond, Claudia Minnich Doug, Diana Burns Max, Doug Mergel Cathy, 20 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and her sister Betty Banzer Ronald. Mom was preceded in death by her husband Loren, son Greg, mother, father, two brothers and one sister.
Mom was an active member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, the Altar Society and taught religious education classes. Mom's faith brought her enormous joy and comfort. Mom had a huge heart filled with love for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren whom all brought her great joy in life.
A Rosary will be held on Thursday, October 23, 7:00 p.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Benton City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, October 24, 1:00 p.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, Benton City.
In lieu of flowers mom request donations may be made to Hospice or The American Cancer Society, Kennewick. The family would like to thank Avalon Care Center and Agape Care for providing such good care and comfort to Mom in her final days.
Thanks for the wonderful memories Mom. We will remember you, miss and love you forever.
I was so sorry to hear about Marian. Please accept my condolences.

Dear Mergel’s ,
I was actually searching for info on Greg when I ran across this news. I am so sorry for your loss, I have so many fond memories growing up in Benton City and spending so much time with Greg he was my best friend, I still miss him very much and out at your guys house. Your mother was such a fun person and always making me laugh. She will be sorely missed. God bless you all.

I am so sorry for your loss. If you need anything please let me know.
Dear Kathy, Connie, Claudia, Diana and Doug–
I wanted you to know that I send our sincere condolences to all of you in the loss of your mom. I remember when we were kids looking forward to going out to your place, spending the night and having your mom make ‘all you can eat pancakes’ for breakfasst and seeing which one of us could eat the most. I remember her hearty laugh!!! Gosh we had fun at your place!!
I spoke to your mom recently to tell her about My Moms death. She said she was not doing to well, but I am sorry I had no idea she was so sick. My mom wanted to go visit her towards the end of her life, but unfortunately was to ill herself to make the trip. She often thought of her old friends. One night she asked me if Loren had passed away?? That was about 4 weeks ago. She was indeed thinking of her old friends.
What at time we are in, I guess its that ‘time of our lives’.
You will miss her and think of her always, as I do already. I have never stopped thinking about my Dad every single day so I am sure it will be the same.
My prayers are with you all, and again, I am so sorry for your loss.
Sincerely and with deepest sympathy—Terri Bettendorf and Tony Edwards
Thank you so much for trusting us with the care of your mother. We are grateful for your confidence and really treasure the time we got to spend with her and with you as a family. We are encouraged to see a family pull together to meet the needs that Marian had. I, Jessica, am so grateful that you all were there to be with her in her final moments and that you were able to fill her last memories brim-full with love and tenderness. Please accept the deepest sympathy of all of us here at Agape’ Care. May God hold all of you close to His heart during this difficult time.
