ANTHONY W. LAUBY January 9, 1919 – January 2, 2008

Anthony W. “Tony” Lauby, 88, died peacefully at his home in Whitstran, with his family at his bedside.

Tony was born Jan. 9, 1919, on his family’s homestead south of Gillette, Wyo., the third child of Mary and Nicholas Lauby. The Laubys moved to Mt. Angel, Ore., in 1922, where he graduated from the Mt. Angel Seminary high school. After a stint in the Civilian Conservation Corps, Tony joined Boeing Aircraft Company, working on the B-17 Flying Fortress.

In August 1941, Tony enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a B-17 mechanic and was stationed in England.

After discharge in 1948, Tony married Louise Stecklein, of Mt. Angel, and settled in Woodburn, Ore. In 1958, he moved his family of four girls to The Dalles, where he was caretaker for Bonneville Power Administration and later owned a music store. Tony returned to BPA in 1967 as caretaker at the Midway substation and community, north of Richland, near Priest Rapids dam.

In 1979, Tony and Louise retired to a few acres near Whitstran, where he remained until his death.

Tony is survived by his wife, Louise; four daughters, Barbara and husband, Jim Macica of Prosser; Patty Romero and husband, Larry, of Spokane; Gerry, with whom they lived; and Mary Anne and husband, Jim Yount, of Sequim; three grand-daughters, Maria Romero of Seattle; Katie Macica of Chicago; and Vanessa Romero and her husband, Caleb Lowrey, of Benton City; one brother, Joe Lauby of Richland; and two sisters, Anne Winslow of Hood River, Ore., and Elizabeth Cutshall of Portland, Ore.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Veronica LeDoux.

Rosary will be said following First Friday services at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Prosser. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Inurnment will take place in the spring at the Mt. Angel cemetery.

  • I read of the passing of Tony with sadness, and with fondness for him… He was a Hero to both our boys, especilly Todd, who got to ride the lawnmower with him,and “help” with his work at Midway. He remembers him with admiration.

    I hope the best for your family – and thankfullness for helping raise my family. All our kids loved Midway, and especially Tony and Louise. We will say prayers for all of you.
