Polly B. Cadd

In recent years, Polly overcame physical challenges time after time, always wanting to get strong enough to take one more hike up Badger Mountain. We admired her fighting spirit. She died October 24, 2007 as a result of a fall.

Helen Pauline Bybee was born on November 5, 1924 in Boise, Idaho, daughter of Genoris and Iola Bybee. Her siblings were Colleen, Virginia and Charles. She graduated from Boise High School.

Polly attended Pacific College now George Fox University in Oregon. She married Robert Milton Cadd on December 22, 1946. Their first son, Theodore Lee, was born in 1948. The summer after graduation, she and Bob worked as fire lookouts for the Olympia Peninsula Ranger Station. They came to Richland in 1952 and son Robert Allen was born. Polly worked for Sears for a number of years as a sales clerk. She was also a telephone operator in the Hanford Area. Her third son, Gary Genoris, was born in 1953. She and Bob were divorced in 1966. Polly was a member of West Side Church for 54 years. Polly was an avid photographer. Her love of picture taking was past down through her sons and grandson. Polly also loved painting. She spent many hours with her oil paints and even did some watercolors.

For over 30 years, Polly cared for over 250 kids at her home daycare. When her ''kids'' were grown, they brought their kids to her for daycare. “Polly's Kids” remember picnics in the park, running errands with her, all sorts of ''art'' events, Christmas parties, listening to classical music and many other things. Mostly, though, they remember that she truly cared about them.

Polly loved the outdoors. Whether hiking, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, she was never more alive then when she was out in the wilderness. She climbed Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams. Her attempt on Mt. Rainier was thwarted by poor weather as they neared the summit. She traveled to Switzerland and hiked all over the Alps.

She is survived by her three sons, Tedd and wife Pam, Richland; Bob and wife Cathy, Issaquah; Gary and wife Deb, Boston. Her grandchildren are Tom Cadd and wife Anna, Kennewick; Amy Milne and husband Jim, Prosser; Jason Cadd, Issaquah; Joshua Cadd and wife Melissa, Wenatchee; Morgan Cadd, Boston; great-grandchildren, Isaac and Andrew Cadd, Wenatchee; Jazmyn Cadd, Kennewick, Blake and Whitney Milne, Prosser; Jerrod Milne, Virginia; Jordan Milne, New York; and great-great granddaughter, Jayden Milne, Virginia. She is also survived by sister, Colleen and husband Bob St. George, Arizona; brother Chuck Bybee, Idaho; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Polly's friend, Jo Manning, who provided in-home care for Polly on several occasions and enabled Polly to live independently at home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Tri-County Partners Habitat for Humanity, 313 Wellsian Way, Richland, WA 99352. Habitat asks that state your gift is in memory of Polly Cadd.

Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 3 at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Richland, with memorial service following at 2 p.m. at West Side Church, 615 Wright, Richland, WA.

  • I’m sitting here at my computer tonight trying to put into words the way I feel about Polly. I’ve always considered her my second Mom. She always accepted you for who you were regardless of your flaws.

She was a remarkable women…one of a kind!!!

She may not have had a lot of money but she would give a person the shirt off her back if she thought they needed it worse than she did…she was the richest person I’ve ever known.

Ted your Mom was really happy for you that you have become so successful with your photography.

Polly was so happy Bob that you had come to visit her and stayed with her at the house recently.

And Gary you always brought a smile to her face whenever you called.

She loved you guys more than you’ll ever know!!!!

It’s hard to think that she’s gone now, but she was able to be independent right up to the last and I know that that was important to her. Her greatest fear was having to leave her home.

Polly was a remarkable women and I’m a far better person for having known her.

My thoughts are with you and your families!!!

  • For more than 50 years, I have considered Polly my second mom. I was honored when she “adopted” me as son #4. She always made me feel at home when I saw her. I have many great memories of times spent with her: cutting asparagus, playing tennis, and hiking on Mt. Rainier. When I got married, she showed the same love for my wife Carol as she had shown for me. She always sent Carol & me cards on our birthdays. When my daughters came along, she loved them like her own grandchildren. She remembered us every Christmas. I will miss her words of encouragement and the dog bone sugar cookies! I will miss her strength of character and love of the outdoors. Until we meet again, Polly, save me a place. Tedd & Pam, Bob & Kathy, Gary & Deb, we grieve with you for our loss of her presence until we are back together again in Heaven.

  • Polly took loving care of two of my children Tara and Heather Stuk. She provided stability in an otherwise chaotic lifestyle. I worked at Hanford and had to leave very early in the morning to catch the bus to work. Polly was very reliable and steadfast in her care, making sure the girls had something to eat, got to school, and followed orders. All of us have very fond memories of Polly and all the good that she did for the children she cared for. She was a wonderful woman. I hope she had some knowledge of the great impact she had on the lives she touched.

  • We were so sorry to hear that Polly is gone. What a sweet, loving, interesting woman she was!

We got to know her through Audubon back in the 1980’s when we first moved to Richland. She was a bird and nature-lover, going on field trips, and always willing to help out when there was a need to volunteer for something.

When our Audubon chapter held a fund-raiser, I remember her delivering a huge tray of cookies to my house for us to sell at a bazaar, and I still have her recipe for Swiss Butterhorns. I enjoyed hearing her tell of her adventures hiking and skiing in the mountains.

When she was doing daycare, I used to see her around town a lot, always with a carload of kids. In more recent years I often saw her on the walking path by the river. It was great to see her out walking, no matter what the weather or her condition. We can all learn a lot from her determination.

Polly had a wonderful spirit, and I know she is missed by her family, her friends, and so many others here on Earth. It was an honor to know her, and I know she is still sending her special blessings and love to all from the other side.

    Wishing you peace,

  • Life has a way of putting special people in your path who give more than you can possible give back. Polly was one of those people in our lives. She watched our children, Ryan, Ben and Cheryl for over 8 years, making it possible for us to work without fear and guilt. Over the years a comment we have heard many times from our children was, “aren’t you glad we had Polly”. She may be gone, but will never be forgotten for her kindness and friendship. • Ted and the rest of the family,

My condolences over your Mom’s passing. Whenever I would run into your Mom at Gary’s Gary Bush’s or at a store, she was always in great spirits, positive, upbeat and happy! Your Mom always warmly greeted me and made me feel welcome.

If there are mountains in Heaven to be climbed, I’m sure she is leading the others to the summit.

    Sincerely,

  • Dear Tedd & family…our sincerest sympathy to you and the rest of your family. Your mother was an outstanding lady, and so fondly loved by Gary, when you guys were “growing up”. Like the rest of us, she had more than her share of trevails, but obviously her FAITH surpassed “giving in”. Our Love & prayers, Bushes Senior
