From Richland, WA, US | Born in Oakland, California
Emmett Alexander Shearer
Birthplace: Oakland, California Resided in: Richland, Washington
Emmett, loving husband, father, and grandfather, had an abounding love for his family and an unfailing sense of humor. He was born July 7, 1924 in Oakland, California. He proudly served in the United States Army-Air Force during World War II. Following his military service, he attended and graduated from U.C. Berkeley, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While attending college, he met the love of his life, Frances Anne Rhodes. They were married on November 18, 1950 in Berkeley, California.
Emmett worked for the space program with Aerojet in Sacramento, California. In 1973, he moved to Richland, Washington after transferring to Westinghouse's Hanford branch, where he worked on the FFTF.
Emmett's hobbies were fishing, cooking, reading, and traveling with his wife and family. Emmett's loving, selfless, and cheerful outlook on life will be greatly missed by his family and his caring friends. His family fondly remembers that Emmett was a success:
Who has lived well, Laughed often and loved much; Who has gained the respect Of intelligent men And the Love of Children; Who has filled his niche And accomplished his task; Who leaves the world better Than he found it, Whether by an improved poppy, A perfect poem Or a rescued soul; Who never lacked appreciation Of earth's beauty Or failed to express it; Who looked for the best in others And gave the best he had.
Emmett is survived by his wife, Frances, of Richland; daughters Suzanne Shearer, Katie Rutledge, and Judy Jordan and her husband, Doug; sister, Honora Logan; sister-in-law, Mary K. Cooney, and her husband, Bob; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson Nathanael Worley.
Services were held on August 2, 2007 at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Richland, Washington.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made for the installation of a memorial bench to the City of Richland, Richland Community Center, Attn: Dave Bryant, 500 Amon Park Drive, Richland, WA 99352. In loving memory of great times spent with family and friends at playgrounds and walks along the Columbia River.
EA is a long time friend of our father James Reiman. He has been a part of our family through out the many years. Dad and EA were are and always will be the best of freinds. The stories of North Africa and Italy, Amendola Airfeild and sweetpea B-17 tail number 42078 will always be a part of our family. May his spirit his stories and his laughter fill all of us.
Emmett’s many friends from the 8140 Valve Group at Aerojet including Wes Finneran, Jim Bowen, and Joe Reade send their condolences.
I will greatly miss my fishing and camping buddy and his many stories of World War II. Who will we have to dig the trench around the tent to keep out the rain water?
One of my fondest memories as a young boy was stream fishing with Emmett. He was a great teacher! He had all the gear creel, salmon eggs, pole. We even had ’em for dinner that night! Water-skiing, swim lessons, tours of nuclear facilities…I’m still not sure exactly what a “fast-flux” is. Thank you Emmett for all of the memories that truly make you a “GREAT” Uncle! Our thoughts are with you Fran and family.
Love,
Tom & Kerensa Brougham

Shearers,
No one can ever take away what Emmett gave to me. Thank you for sharing him so unselfishly. Some of my memories include installing a cruise control in a car, home-made ice cream, a heath kit depth finder, billiards, ping pong including doubles, fixing and washing cars and a boat water skiing, minestrone soup, seeing a fish ladder, and of course fishing, fishing, and more fishing. It seemed like planning a fishing trip would get Emmett through about six weeks of work. I will spend a life time paying forward all the time, attention, and love he shared with me. May God bless you while the loss hurts so much, and may you find peace in the hollow of His hands.
Love,
–Michael Bean

So sorry to hear of Emmett’s passing. He truly was my very best friend, and I will miss him greatly. It is said that one can count their true friends on the fingers of one hand. Emmett occupies one of those fingers of my hand.
Emmett and I had many great fishing and camping trips together. It was he who led me to the Sacramento area, where we worked together in the Engineering Department of Aerojet, developing control valves for the Titan liquid rocket engines.
I expect he is fishing somewhere right now, provided he can find some worms!
Dear Auntie Fran, Suzy, Katie and Judy,
Please accept my very great sympathy.
My family and I will really miss Uncle Emmett. It was Uncle Emmett who first introduced me to the great outdoors and who instilled in me a continuing love for camping, hiking, and yes, even fishing. As a young person he pushed me to take chances, to try the unknown and not to fear failure but to learn from it. It is a life lesson I hope to pass on to my own family.
Uncle E’s big goofy grin and tremendous laugh is a memory I will forever cherish. I loved that man.
Our thoughts are with you.
Love,
Patricia, Ken, Maddie, Anna and Kate Cooney Moore

To Suzanne and family, we extend our deepest sympathy. Our hearts are with you at this time and may God also be with you.
We only knew Emmett for a few years, but he was a great neighbor. We loved to hear about his days in the Army Air Force over in Italy. He was always a good source of advice on different topics: gardening, fishing, home repairs. Dennis especially appreciated a kindred spirit with a feisty personality. We’ll miss you.
