Shirley June Stewart

Shirley J. Moorman Stewart, 70, of Cle Elum, Washington passed away December 31, 2006 at her home. She was born September 26, 1936 in Mangum, Oklahoma to Dee and Barbara Carter Moorman. Her family relocated to the Tri-Cities when she was a young child.

Shirley was a graduate of Columbia High in 1954. She worked for a local insurance company for several years. In March of 1956 she married Lionel C. Stewart, Jr. They were married for 46 years. She transitioned in to a full-time homemaker in February of 1959 with the birth of their first child. She and Lionel had three more children while in the Tri-Cities. Choosing to relocate to Redmond, Washington in 1964, her fifth child was born and the family lived there for the next 21 years.

After her children left the nest she and Lionel chose to relocate to the Cle Elum area, where they both resided until the Lord’s calling them home. Lionel preceded her by five years. Mom found great comfort and peace in the home they shared and built there.

Shirley took great pride in her five children and close relational family. She also enjoyed owning and sharing in an electrical contracting business in Richland with her husband, her employment with Smyth Van Lines Corporate Offices, and her 27 years as owner of The Knife Works & Black Powder Company, where she was renowned as “The Black Powder Lady.”

Survivors include her five children: Ron, Elaine, Julieann, Lori and Kim; thirteen grandchildren: Kennith, Charles, Carolyn, Clinton, Kevin, Joshua, Austin, Kyle, Krista, Andrew, Jacob, Brittney and Dillon; as well as her mother and three siblings. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lionel C. Stewart, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, January 6, 2007 at Einan’s Funeral Home, Richland, with private interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to North Star Lodge cancer clinic, 808 N. 39th Ave., Yakima, WA 98902.

  • Shirley was my mentor to motherhood when Darrell and I lived in Renton. She was very generous with help as we started our family and struggled to start our married life. I will be forever grateful to her and her support. May god bless all of you during this time of sorrow.
