Marie Martha Gottschalk

On October 19, 1920, Marie Martha was welcomed into this world in Athol, Idaho by her parents James and Anna Berg. She departed this world at the Hospice House in Kennewick on November 3, 2006.

Marie was raised in Genesee, Idaho and Walla Walla, Washington and moved to Spokane, Washington to begin her training and career as a registered nurse. She served as an R.N. in the Army Air Service Command during World War II at numerous hospitals from San Diego La Jolla to Florida.

After World War II, Marie attended Gonzaga University and met Paul Gottschalk. They were married at Sacred Heart Church in Spokane on December 27, 1948. She continued to be a loyal Gonzaga Basketball fan all of her life. The family moved to Richland in 1952 where Marie was a homemaker and raised her family.

Marie loved antiquing and was well known for the beautiful linens which she both collected and sold at the Tri-Cities antique shows at the Benton Franklin Fairgrounds. She loved to yard sale. Discovering a great 'find' always brought a bright smile to her face. Her other love were family vacations on the Oregon coast.

Marie is survived by her loving husband of 58 years Paul Gottschalk and children Ann Smet, Gary Judy Gottschalk, Alan Sharon Gottschalk, and John Heidi Gottschalk. She is also survived by grandchildren Jason & Angie Southwick, Mark & Elaine Gottschalk, and Michelle & Garrett Gottschalk, and great-grandchildren Nathan, Jonathan & Alanna Southwick and Tanner True.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Norman Berg and Henry Soeller, and her grandson Andrew Gottschalk.

She is loved by her family and will always be remembered fondly for her wonderful ability to listen, her wisdom, her generous nature, and her great sense of humor and smile. Marie will be missed by all of those close to her and remain in our hearts forever.

A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, November 11 at 11AM at Christ the King Catholic Church in Richland, with reception to follow immediately at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Hospice House or Christ the King Catholic Church.

  • Grandma Marie was one of the bravest and most honest women I have ever had the opportunity to know. Somehow she always turned every family event into comedy, with everyone laughing so hard they cried. My first memories of Grandma are at the Oregon Coast. She always had the good kind of crackers in her cabin!! I always used a certain glass when visiting in Richland and she always remembered to have “Elaine’s strawberry glass” even when I was no longer a little kid. I will miss my Grandma Marie very much, but am so honored to have been able to spend so many years with her.

Rest easy Grandma. I know you are in a better place now and that you will watch over all of us. Please give Andrew a hug for me. We will all take care of Grandpa for you. I love you.

  • I have such fond memories of Aunt Marie when we visited Washington in the summer, and she made peach pies. She was a comfort to me after my dad died because she looked so much like him. I will miss her. Sorry I won’t be with you, but am glad Eric will represent our family.

  • Grandma Marie was truly an amazing woman. I was constantly in awe of her endless love. Living in the Tri-Cites with no extended family and dating Andrew for so long I came to call the Gottschalks my family. Grandma Marie really was my grandmother and I loved her dearly. My favorite memories of her are the dinners we would share at Al and Sharon’s. I will never forget the pleasure she got from “sneaking” food to Igloo. She will be missed by all that knew her.

Grandma, please give my love to Andrew. It gives me comfort to know that he has you. May both of you rest now.
