From Benton, City, WA, US | Born in Richland, Washington
Richard ”Rick” Thomas Rose
Richard Rick Thomas Rose, 20, died on October 22, 2005, from a tragic accident in Morris, Minnesota.
He was born to Jerry and Patti Rose in Richland, Washington on January 31, 1985. Rick is survived by his two parents, his brother, Jack and sister, Nichole, two grandmas Karla Schindler and Nadine Rose, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and many other friends and family. He was proudly raised in Benton City, Washington.
Rick, in pursuit of his childhood dream to play college basketball, moved to Morris, MN in 2003. There he was a full-time student at the University of Minnesota-Morris where he was granted an academic scholarship, and was a forward on the basketball team. He was in his third year at Morris working toward a BS in Biology, with an emphasis in teaching, and in hopes of coaching basketball.
One of Ricks most memorable career accomplishments was helping lead Ki-Be to an 8th place finish in the 2002 2A state tournament. It was Kiona-Bentons first time in the state tournament since 1987.
He enjoyed spending time with friends and family, being part of the 3 amigos, driving cross-country with his roommates, the family reunions at his sisters college, wrestling with his two dogs, going to the lake, playing his brother Jack one-on-one, beach volleyball, watching Luke Ridnour and the Sonics, and talking on the phone to his girlfriend at night.
Rick was a people person and got much joy out of helping others. He worked as a lifeguard and basketball referee while at Morris, and returned home during the summer to give swim lessons to the kids in Benton City.
Ricks sweet, big smile and unconditional love will be missed and remembered by everyone who knew him.
Our friend, our teammate, our nephew, our brother, our son .we love you and miss you.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 29, at 1:00 PM at the Kiona-Benton High School Gymnasium, in Benton City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made at any U.S. Bank under Rick Rose.
16 years have passed and I still think of you often my dear friend.
Spending my first two years of college with rick were great. I have many great memories of him as a friend, basketball teammate and as a great person. I feel that i was blessed just to know him. He will be in my heart and in my memories forever.
I remember preparing for a “Christmas in July” pool party and Rick was kind of being humbug about it. So, when the day came, the rest of the staff wore Santa hats and reindeer ears, and he sported a tank top with “Grinch” written on it. I remember he took that shirt and wore it proud like it was the best Christmas gift he could’ve ever gotten. I think of that experience as a great example of how he was with his work. He would occasionally grumble about working mornings or teaching lots of swimmings lessons, but once he was out there, you could tell he took pride and enjoyed what he did. As his manager, I received many compliments about Rick and enjoyed watching him mature from the shy 15 year old sub-lifeguard to an integral part of the George Prout Pool team. His contributions are everlasting and I feel fortunate for having the honor of meeting such an outstanding individual.
I always enjoyed working with Rick during the summer, he was truly a genuine person who will be dearly missed.
Long hours at the pool, all summer long for 4 summers, and I am filled with only wonderful memories of Rick Rose. He will be missed by so many people; the ones I can speak for are those who worked at The George Prout Memorial Pool with Rick any of the 5 summers he was there. I remember his nice BIG tan line from his guard tube, him and Jeff CHANTING “McGriddle McGriddle McGriddle” until I gave up and went to McDonalds to get them a McGriddle, road trip to Hermiston, and so many more memories…I feel so blessed to have had Rick as a friend, what a wonderful person he was.

I’d just like to say how much Rick will be missed. He touched so many of us here in Morris and was a great person. His presense in classes and in campus in general will really be missed, by me and everyone else. I’m so sorry for your loss….my prayers are with you and God Bless.

The pain is so deep but know that Rick is watching over us and he will help us get through this. The gates of heaven opened for him and so many people were waiting to welcome him home. Grandpa Rose and Granpa Schindler will guide him as well in his new home. He is amongst the Angels now but will be forever in our hearts. God Bless you and may he give you strenght, give you hope and give you peace.
Jerry, Patty, Jack, Nicole, Schlinder Family, and Rose Family: Words can’t express how I feel. I am so sorry! Rick will be your ‘Angel’ now and will watch over you all. He always had a smile on his face. I will miss seeing his smiling face. If you all every need anything, day or night please give me a call. We love you all! The Hall Family
Dear Rose Family,
I would just like to say how sorry I am for your loss. Rick was a great guy and I will trully miss him. He was one of the few people who are Angels amoung us to teach us love and compassion for others until God asks them to come home and it was time for Rick to do so. Someday we will return and Ricky will be waiting for us with a huge smile and open arms. I love him and miss him dearly, but I know he is with us. I feel his presence on a warm fall day and at the sporting events he so dearly loved. We will miss our angel but we WILL see him again. You are in my prayers. With my deepest sympathy and love!

UMM student and friend of Rick Rose!
I wish the most heartfelt sympathy for your family as I was there on the field the day he passed away… I was in shock all that day and on Sunday. My heart goes out to your family in prayer as well as all the football team and Rick’s friends. I know God has a plan despite this great tragedy. It’s ok to ask ‘Why?.’ I pray that Jesus Christ would comfort you with His peace through this painful time… Lord willing, we’ll see Rick again soon in Heaven.
