Duncan McCulloch

Duncan McCulloch, 67, of Pasco passed away October 19, 2005 at Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice House after a long battle with cancer. He was born September 11, 1938 to Melita Morley McCulloch and Samuel McCulloch in Workington, England.

He left school at 14 his father died so Duncan quit his formal schooling and went to work in the coal mines to help support his mother and younger brother. He studied mining engineering in his spare time. At 21 he left the coal mines and worked for the National Electric board and changed his major to electrical engineering.

Duncan emigrated to America in 1969 and worked for the New Jersey Power and Light Company.

In 1973, Duncan found the teachings of ECKANKAR. He learned that each person is a divine being who comes to life on Earth with a spiritual purpose. Lifetime after lifetime, Soul grows in love and grace, ultimately to become a co-worker with God. A lifetime is a precious gift, an opportunity for spiritual growth and service to others. Most of all, life brings Soul the purity of love, compassion, and grace. Each of us travels a path of spiritual unfoldment, only partly visible to others. This is the secret inner side of life, our private communication with God. Birth and death mark the journey of Soul. The translation from one stage of experience to another is but a further step on Soul’s journey home to God.

Duncan is Soul: an eternal individual spark of God, who can never die, but who has left this arena for a new one.

In 1980, Duncan was ordained as an ECK Cleric and shortly thereafter moved his family to the Tri-Cities to work at the Hanford Works in the Electrical Utilities Department. His final position was in the Electrical Dispatch Center. He retired in Oct. 2000 and spent his remaining years enjoying extensive world travel.

He is survived by his wife Margaret; daughters Heather Ortiz and Claire McCulloch; nine grandchildren: Heather, Lauren, David, John and Gordon McCulloch of Pittsburg, PA, Logan Craig, Mason and Jaxon Ortiz of Pasco, and Avery Elizabeth McCulloch-Hutton of Richland. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews in America, England, New Zealand and Australia. Duncan was well-loved by All.

A memorial service to celebrate Duncan’s life will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005 at Einan’s Funeral Home, Richland. Refreshments will follow at 4107 Acacia Court in Pasco.

  • The warmth from Duncan’s blue eyes, beautiful smile and golden heart can melt an iceberg. That is what stands out to me about Duncan. It was not his stunningly good looks, but his warmth. I feel so privileged and grateful to know Duncan and to experience a powerhouse for Love the likes of Duncan. My heart and warm thoughts go out to Margaret in this time of transition.

    All my love,

  • Margaret, Sorry for your loss, although I only had the chance to meet Duncan a couple of times, I felt as if we had been friends for years. He was a kind and gentle man who freely gave of himself, not only for his family, but also to anyone who came into contact with him. When I was in his presence, he had a very calming affect on me and I know he was deeply loved by his family. As I go through my own life, I only wish that I could strive to be more like him, and to be as loved by so many. I thank you Duncan, for the brief time that we had together, and to you Margaret, I wish I could take away your hurt, but I saw the love you two had together, it was in your eyes, and in your faces when you sat in the company of your family. Your smiles, told it all

We love you both and will miss him deeply.

  • We met Duncan and Margaret through the mutual connection of our granddaughter Avery McCulloch-Hutton. My husband and I enjoyed getting to know Duncan and Margaret through a few dinners and Trivial Pursuit game playing. Duncan was a remarkable man, very loving and compassionate. He showed a genuine interest in everyone he met. From the beginning of our relationship we knew we Duncan was a truly special man. I am confident that everyone who met Duncan felt the same way as we do. He will certainly be missed. I pray his family will find some comfort in knowing how much Duncan was loved by all who knew him.

  • Margaret,

I remember when Duncan first got diagnosed and special experiences that eased those first hospital stays. I did not know he was in hospice, but all Brothers of the Leaf are connected in the Light and Sound of God.

I will always treasure the times at Menucha and seminars and the wisdom and love you both shared with me.

  • As Duncan’s cousin, I remember him as a little boy – he was ten years younger than me, and also John, his younger brother. After Duncan emigrated we had no more contact until about eight years ago when our relationship was renewed after Bill and I had visited John’s grave in Cyprus. I have so enjoyed all the letters and photographs which have passed between us with the culmination of the visit by Duncan and Margaret to our home. It was a great pleasure to know him as an adult and I remember him with fondest love.
