Russell James Whitney

Russell James Whitney, 43, of Kennewick, died Saturday, June 11, 2005 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane Washington. He was born January 17, 1962 in Prosser Washington and has lived in the Tri-Cities most of his life.

Russ graduated from Richland High School in 1980 and worked in construction for over 20 years. He was a member of the Sheetmetal Workers Union and was a skilled ironworker, welder and fabricator. His work consisted of the construction of many of the large steel buildings that are a now part of our community. We will think of him whenever we see these structures that were so proudly touched by his hands.

Russ was a devoted father, and his children were always his highest priority. He always had a light attitude and a great sense of humor. He enjoyed tinkering with just about anything. He was generous, always looking to help others whenever in need. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Russ is survived by his daughter Marie 21, son Brandon 19; brothers Thomas and Wallace of Kennewick, and Gerald and Edward of West Richland; sister, Karen Whitney Davis of Richland; and father, LeeRoy of West Richland. Russ was preceded in death by his mother Willo of West Richland, and his brother Ron of Auburn Washington.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2005 at Einan’s Funeral Home in Richland.

  • To Marie and Brandon,

It will be the little things that you will remember, the quiet moments, the smiles, the laughter. And although it may seem hard right now, it will be the memory of these little things that help to push away the pain and bring your smiles back again.

Do believe he’ll never leave you: Always he’ll be in your heart. Don’t forget his soul is near you, and so you’ll never be apart.

  • I met Russ when his daughter, Marie, and my daughter, Lindsay, not only were in the same class in grade school but were placed on the same soccer team also. The team had almost fallen apart as the coach quit, but Russ stepped right up and said ” I will coach this team”. Even though I didn’t know him that well, I thought he was so kind and generous to help these kids and everyone on the team really liked him! My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

  • Just wanted to send my condolences. I haven’t seen Russell in over twenty years, but will always remember him as being part of the Cottonwood gang of kids. What a group of wild and crazy kids we were. Growing up in the sixties and seventies on the south end of Richland will always be part of my fondest memories. He will be missed. Gauin E. Moore “82”

  • Russ was such a great guy! Always had a smile and great attitude. Very few fathers cared so much for their kids as Russ did. Brandon and Marie, your dad was very proud of you. He will always be with you– continue to make him proud.

  • Brandon and Marie,

I was so saddened to hear about your Dad. I will miss his phone calls and long conversations…mostly about you kids.

I’ll always remember him as a good friend, devoted Dad, and one of the nicest people I have ever known.

    He will be greatly missed.

Let me know if there is anything I can do…even if you just want to talk.

  • So sorry to hear about Russell, his passing is truly a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. I remember him as a shy, quieter type, who was always friendly and polite. My daughter Stefanie Bird went clear through school with Marie…and never had anything but good things to say about her…she must have taken after her Dad. Russell, thanks for all the rides home from school, when you would see me walking…I really appreciated those. Til we meet again old neighbor.

  • To the Whitney family:

I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. I remember Russ as the littlest, sweetest and cutest of all the Whitney boys when we all lived in Whitstran. you were all a handsome bunch of kids, but Russ was such a cutie! I wish to express my sincerest sympathy, it’s so hard to lose a sibling. May fond memories sustain you all.

    Meanwhile…

    God be with you,
